Evaluate what you already know and recognize what modes of learning you have used in the past have helped you successfully. It would also be effective if you identify your interests and know what you wish to learn and achieve.
- Motivate yourself. Motivation is the fuel that drives people to strive to learn more things. You should motivate yourself in order to accomplish more with foreign languages. Ask yourself some questions: why do you want to learn your target language? For what and where will you need the use of your target language? What skills do you need to learn or improve? How soon do you want to see results? How much time do you have to learn your target language? How much money are you willing to spend to learning your target language? Do you have plans or learning strategies?
- Set achievable goals. If you already know how much time you are willing to spend in learning your target language, better put it into good use. Learning your target language in short periods each day will produce better results compared to spending a full day on a weekend then having to wait for another weekend for another lesson. Set your goals like: join a language learning course of your target language; do your homework; learn a new word every day; read a news article on the internet written in your target language every day; do a 10 minute listening practice every day; watch a movie in your target at least once a month; finish reading a whole book written in your target language for a month; or follow a show or soap opera in your target language. Try on setting a reward for yourself once you achieve any of your goals; that can motivate you to work harder!
- Understanding how you learn best may help you. There are many different ways to learn languages that’s why you have to find out your strengths so you can identify where you can focus. If you are a visual learner, ask yourself if you need to see your teacher during lessons in order to fully understand them? Do you think that you can learn best with visual displays such as pictures, videos, hand-outs, charts, and diagrams? You may benefit from traditional language group lessons but private lessons may help you learn better. If you are an auditory learner, do you prefer to learn through verbal lectures, discussion, and listening to what others have to say? Do you find written information not very valuable unless you hear it? Do you interpret the underlying meanings of speech through listening to tone of voice, speed, pitch and other elements? You may try listening to audio tools or listen to yourself read text. You could try reading out loud and recording your voice; play it back to yourself to gauge if you have learned how to speak the language too. If you are a tactile or kinesthetic learner, do you learn best through a hand-son approach? Do you become distracted easily? It may be beneficial for you to take an active part in the learning process though drama or role play activities.
